13 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Thaksin University: Agricultural initiative to provide food security and sustainability The university has opened up its land for poor households to cultivate various crops. This project aims to alleviate poverty through comprehensive and systematic measures and also develop economic resources and social communities. The university is actively collaborating with partner networks and farmer groups in the area to implement the concept of food safety resource engagement. To further support agricultural sustainability, Thaksin University is conducting research and innovation projects aimed at addressing poverty in Phatthalung province. In collaboration with Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI), the Program Management Unit Area Based Development (PMU A), Pa Phayom District, and the Phatthalung Community Development Office, Thaksin University is supporting 20 households in utilizing the university’s area for agricultural activities. This initiative aims to create a local food source and enhance the economic and social capital of the community. August 2022 marked the first harvesting season for agricultural crops. Farmer groups collaborated with Thaksin University and community networks to cultivate and harvest the crops. A production portion was distributed among the farmer groups for their families’ consumption, while the remaining surplus was sold at the Rimchon Market NO POVERTY 1 on the Thaksin University campus under the Lan Yo TSU brand. The proceeds from the sales were then used to purchase soil amendments for the next planting season. The success of this project can be attributed to Thaksin University’s effective collaboration with partner networks, farmer groups, and community members, as well as the support of Pa Phayom District and provincial authorities.
